The quantum computer is a futuristic machine that could operate at speeds even more mind-boggling than the world's fastest super-computers.

Research involving physicist Mike Thewalt of Simon Fraser University offers a new step towards making quantum computing a reality, through the unique properties of highly enriched and highly purified silicon.

Quantum computers right now exist pretty much in physicists' concepts, and theoretical research. There are some basic quantum computers in existence, but nobody yet can build a truly practical oneor really knows how.

Such computers will harness the powers of atoms and sub-atomic particles (ions, photons, electrons) to perform memory and processing tasks, thanks to strange sub-atomic properties.

What Thewalt and colleagues at Oxford University and in Germany have found is that their special silicon allows processes to take place and be observed in a solid state that scientists used to think required a near-perfect vacuum.

And, using this "28Silicon" they have extended to three minutesfrom a matter of secondsthe time in which scientists can manipulate, observe and measure the processes.

"It's by far a record in solid-state systems," Thewalt says. "If you'd asked people a few years ago if this was possible, they'd have said no. It opens new ways of using solid-state semi-conductors such as silicon as a base for quantum computing.

"You can start to do things that people thought you could only do in a vacuum. What we have found, and what wasn't anticipated, are the sharp spectral lines (optical qualities) in the 28Silicon we have been testing. It's so pure, and so perfect. There's no other material like it."

But the world is still a long way from practical quantum computers, he notes. Quantum computing is a concept that challenges everything we know or understand about today's computers.

Your desktop or laptop computer processes "bits" of information. The bit is a fundamental unit of information, seen by your computer has having a value of either "1" or "0".

That last paragraph, when written in Word, contains 181 characters including spaces. In your home computer, that simple paragraph is processed as a string of some 1,448 "1"s and "0"s.

But in the quantum computer, the "quantum bit" (also known as a "qubit") can be both a "1" and a "0"and all values between 0 and 1at the same time.

Says Thewalt: "A classical 1/0 bit can be thought of as a person being either at the North or South Pole, whereas a qubit can be anywhere on the surface of the globeits actual state is described by two parameters similar to latitude and longitude."

Make a practical quantum computer with enough qubits available and it could complete in minutes calculations that would take today's super-computers years, and your laptop perhaps millions of years.

The work by Thewalt and his fellow researchers opens up yet another avenue of research and application that may, in time, lead to practical breakthroughs in quantum computing.

Their paper will be published Friday in Science.

PPC Glossary- A Guide as a Whole

Pay per click is one of the most effective marketing tools that is used for promoting businesses on the internet. When you opt for the pay per click advertising method for marketing your business you will be sure to reap the best results. PPC or pay per click advertising happens to be essentially an extremely cheap form of advertising. As an advertiser, you submit the advertisement for your business along with an extensive list of keywords. You then have to decide on the amount that you will be willing to pay every time your advertisement is clicked by a viewer online. The amount is usually in cents. If you want to know about the various terms associated with pay per click advertising, there are some crucial terms which you need to remember.

Important Words in the PPC Glossary

? Ad Words and Click

? One of the most important terms in the ppc glossary is ad words.

This is the advertising platform established by Google where ads are shown on the pages generated by the search engine. Click is also a popular term that is included in the PPC glossary. It is basically a term which is used in paid search for referring to users interacting with advertisements by simply clicking over these advertisements and then being delivered to website pages. A click over an advertisement usually generates a visitor or a hit to one website.

? Conversation Rate and CPA

? Conversion rate is a vital term in ppc glossary. It is the percentage rate of the clicks to events. Here visitors convert to goal events like booking a flight or filling a form. CPA is also an important part of the ppc glossary. It is cost per action and is essentially the cost demanded for specific actions that have been undertaken by a particular user when he or she has responded to a particular advertisement. Such an action may also sometimes be referred to as what is known as conversion. Examples of cost per action or CPA include ordering a product successfully on the internet or download a brochure from the internet. It can be greatly useful in determining how successful a particular paid per click advertisement campaign is.

? KPI and Keywords

? KPI is a common part of ppc glossary. It is key performance indicator and is something that is used for determining the effectiveness of the ppc campaigns. Keywords are also a very crucial part of the ppc glossary. They are phrases or words that visitors on the internet search for in the search engines like Google or Yahoo. Keywords can be both short as well as lengthy depending upon the requirements of the advertiser.

Thus, there are quite a few important terms in the ppc glossary which you need to know before you embark on a pay per click advertising campaign.

36 arrested in Puerto Rico airport drug running ring

Thirty-six people were arrested on Wednesday in a crackdown on a drug trafficking ring that used Puerto Rico's main airport to smuggle large quantities of cocaine off the island aboard U.S.-bound passenger flights, authorities said.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration said the 36 detainees, including 22 suspects rounded up at San Juan's International Airport, were among 45 people indicted for smuggling more than 61,000 pounds of cocaine out of the U.S. territory on commercial flights to the U.S. mainland since 1999.

"It's an important blow," said Laila Rico, a spokeswoman for the DEA's Caribbean Division, which is headquartered in Puerto Rico.

"The Puerto Rico airport is sought-after by drug dealers because it's basically a mid-point between South American countries and the United States and offers an easy entry point," Rico said.

She was referring to the Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan, the point from which the bulk of the drugs were flown to Miami and Orlando, in Florida, and Newark, New Jersey, aboard flights operated by American Airlines.

The DEA said in a statement that some suspects caught up in the drug bust were current or former American Airlines employees and airport personnel, who used a designated bathroom to hand over cocaine to couriers preparing to board U.S.-bound flights.

Cargo handlers on the payroll of the drug ring also worked to ensure that drug-laden suitcases were placed aboard U.S.-bound flights, the DEA said.

"The defendants in this investigation not only utilized their positions and security access to smuggle large quantities of illegal narcotics, but they also compromised the safety and security at one of the Caribbean's most vital airports," Pedro Janer, the special agent who runs the DEA's operations across the Caribbean, said in a statement.

Puerto Rico, a U.S. commonwealth of about 4 million people, has long been known as a leading transshipment point for the smuggling of illicit drugs out of South America and into the United States.

Three of the suspects arrests on Wednesday were detained in the United States, according to Rico. She said two were nabbed at Miami International Airport and one at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

Reuters' Kevin Gray in Miami contributed to this report.

Basic Dog Care Tips: What Every Dog Lover Should Know | Kissed ...

Tales of young and old recount the absolute bond of friendship between dogs and humans. Among all animals, dogs as pets are notable for their unconditional love and loyalty to their owners. Their protective instincts prod them to risk their lives for their owners who may be in danger. In response to such fidelity, owners should love and properly care for their pet dogs.

Proper care includes bathing, food, grooming, health care, recreation, shelter and safety. Not only physical health problems are likely to surface from improper care for dogs but also behavioral problems. Listed below are some basic dog care tips which you need to follow in nurturing your pets.

Bathing and Grooming

Bathing is necessary for your pet dogs to be clean. Although, important it should only be done once a month as frequent bathing can dry out your pet?s skin, thus, making it more susceptible to skin infections. Wiping your pet with a moist towel or washing just its paws would be enough to keep it dirt-free in between its bath intervals.

Grooming, on the other hand, should be done in a daily basis. Among all the dog care tips at hand, this is the most enjoyed duty of all dog lovers. At three months, your pet is physically prepared to receive proper grooming procedures. Always ensure that its fur is smooth and tangle-free through proper combing. Be gentle in brushing your pet?s coat to avoid any scratch on its skin.

Health Care

Regular visit your veterinarian for a physical examination and vaccinations is one of the ideal dog care tips that would totally keep your pet in shape. However, if such visit is unworkable, you can personally check your dog?s body. You can start inspecting its ears, mouth and teeth. Check the pad of your pet?s feet for any injury. Scrutinize its coat for any fleas and its dung for presence of worms. Bring your pet to a veterinarian right away in case of flea and heart worm infestation.

You may also consult your veterinarian on neutering your pet dog. Neutering gives any dog a lot of health benefits. It makes pet dogs less aggressive and less prone to prostrate cancer and development of tumors related to hormonal activities

Food

Maintain a balanced diet rich in vitamins, protein, minerals and right amounts of calories. Give your pet plenty of clean water to drink especially on hot summer days. Contact a veterinarian if you find your dog feeling restless due to heat. Heatstroke is life-threatening for dogs.

Shelter

A dog house is the most appropriate form of shelter to provide your pet with. In the case of animated and huge dogs, letting them stay in a fence yard is more advisable. Time comes when your pets long for human company. Scheduling a weekend when they could stay in your house or sleep with you in the bed or couch would calm their anxieties on being alone.

Recreation

Some dog owners prefer their pets tied up most of the time. Bear in mind that pet dogs need physical activities such as running and walking to keep their bodies healthy too. More than that, doing these physical exercises with your dogs quenches their need for human attention and care. Keeping dogs busy physically will also help keep behavioral problems aside. During summer season, do not force your pets to perform exercises with you especially when they are not in the mood to do so. Just let them stay in cool resting place as they are more vulnerable to heat than humans.

Security

All pet dogs should be in collars with tags holding their names, their owners? names and their addresses. In case of loss, dogs can easily be easily returned to their rightful owners with such information. Using a leash when taking your pets for a walk is one of the important dog care tips too as it will keep your dog safe and secure from accidents.

9 jurors chosen so far in Jerry Sandusky trial

Forty prospective jurors were interviewed for the sexual abuse trial of former Penn State Coach Jerry Sandusky. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at 10:40 p.m. ET -- By the end of the day Tuesday, nine jurors were selected?at a central Pennsylvania courthouse, where former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky will stand trial?on charges of sexually abusing children.

"I need you to all have an open mind," Judge John Cleland told jurors, according to PennLive.com. "This defendant is charged with sexual abuse of children."

Sandusky, who had been laughing as Cleland made a few jokes with jurors, immediately looked down at that point, PennLive's reporter wrote from the courtroom.

One of two middle-aged women selected told the court she's been a Penn State football season-ticketholder since the 1970s and that her husband works for the medical group where the father of key witness Mike McQueary previously worked. A 24-year-old man was also selected.

Cleland said that unless ties to witnesses or Sandusky were strong, relationships such as hers would not mean she could not serve on the jury, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

The jury selection officially started later than scheduled with 240 prospective jurors out of the 600 who were called. The pool will be narrowed to 12 jurors and four alternates.

The initial pool of 600 was narrowed down via an at-home questionnaire, PennLive.com reported.

The 240 potential jurors will be divided into groups of 40 for more questions, followed by one-on-one questioning for those who are not dismissed. The process could take days, reported AP, but the judge said he wants the trial to start Monday.

Cleland also told the prospective jurors what their duties would entail and said they would not be sequestered during the trial, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Judges rarely isolate juries; when they do, it is to prevent them from being swayed or threatened.

"I'm trusting you will not read the newspapers, watch TV news, will not read blogs,? the judge said, according to the Inquirer. ?I'm sure that judgment will not be misplaced."

Jurors are being chosen from among people who live in the State College area, where Penn State's main campus is located, AP reported.

TV trucks surrounded the courtroom, as potential jurors began slowly filing into the front door of the courthouse around 8 a.m. One man wore a gray Penn State sweatshirt, AP reported.

Sandusky and his lawyer, Joe Amendola, made no comments as they arrived. He has repeatedly denied the charges.

Sandusky, 68, faces 52 criminal counts for alleged abuse of 10 boys over 15 years. Some of the alleged victims are expected to testify.

The defense also presented a list of some 60 possible witnesses that includes: the son and wife of the late coach Joe Paterno; former Penn State President Graham Spanier; and PennLive.com reporter Sara Ganim.

Previous report: Sandusky accusers must use real identities at trial

On Monday, the alleged victims were told they would have to use their real names when they testified. Lawyers for five accusers had requested their clients be allowed to use pseudonyms.

Penn State, for its part, released a statement on the trial that read: "We are further hopeful that the legal process will start to bring closure to the alleged victims and families whose lives have been irrevocably impacted and that they can begin the healing process."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Focus on the Family Community: Relationships and Marriage ...

Where to begin.... Like all stories start in the beginning, let's start there. I met my wife about 2 years ago, but of course she wasn't my wife then. I was married but living separately away from my then current wife. I was a Christian but not following in HIS word. I had turned away from God and lived life how I wanted....not how He wanted me too. Anyway's.. I met this absolutely beautiful woman and we starting dating. I was in the process of getting a divorce and told the woman I had been dating that. She said she understood and wanted to continue the relationship anyway. She was a follower in Christ and stated the only way that this relationship was going to work was if we both was in HIS word and following HIM. I had been feeling God tug on my heart for a long time, and rededicated my life to HIM. We started dating exclusively and became very serious. My divorce went through and felt that I had a new chance at a renewed marriage with God at the helm. I moved into her house, but slept in a separate bed because we did not want to smear our relationship with God with sex.

???? I invited her to a wedding celebration for my nephew shortly after moving into her house, and she agreed to go with me and my daughter. The wedding went well and we all went to the reception and she started to notice things about my family that she didn't like. After my mother had left the reception, my sister came up to my girlfriend and was upset that I had started to change and now follow Christ and that she was to blame. I wanted to leave right then and there, but my girlfriend wanted to talk to my sister and try to calm her down. It was then that my sister compared her to my ex-wife and said she was younger looking and prettier than her. This devasted my girlfriend and we left the party. At home she asked my daughter if it was true if my ex-wife was younger looking and prettier than her and she agreed with my sister. She then asked me if it was true, and I said she is younger looking, but you are definitely prettier than her. This again devasted her. Fast forward about a year and we are engaged to get married and she had since forgiven me for the comment. My daughter has not made it easy for me to be in this relationship with her. She has manipulated and lied to my wife and told her she was jealous of her. One evening we got into an argument about my daughter and I defended my daughter from my my fiance. That enraged her and in my anger I made a comment about how she looked better in pictures then in real life.

???? She again forgave me for the comment and we get married. Since the marriage we have stopped going to church, she doesn't believe that we have to go to church to worship God. She drinks on a regular basis, and curses a lot as well. She also has anger issues, but she also suffers from a mental illness. She still says she believes in God and loves him, but doesn't want to be seen in church because of my comments about her face. She has slowly eroded to a shell and blames it all on me because of my comment about her face. She has kicked me out of her house, but let me back in to work it out. She says she is now repulsed by me or my touch and has denied any kind of intimacy. She said it is going to take years for her to trust me again or have those feelings for me. She is also obsessed about her face now and spends hours at the mirror and won't even let me look at her, because I compared her to my ex-wife. I acknowledge what I said was wrong, and have repented and asked forgiveness for it, She continues to bring it up everyday and makes me aware that I messed this marriage up. I have gone into a depression since and try to put on a brave face for everyone, but it is extremely difficult to be motivated. She says my comments are the same as infidelity and feels I have betrayed her. I believe that God has a purpose for me, and that He lets things happen so we can draw nearer to Him. When He strips everything we have and we are left with nothing, I know He wants us to turn to Him... I'm just having a hard time with it.... Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Tokyo market hits 28-year low

LONDON (Reuters) - European shares joined a global sell-off in riskier assets on Monday after disappointing May economic data from the United States and China overwhelmed any positive impact from hopes the world's central banks would ease policy further.

The euro slid 0.3 percent to $1.2400, moving closer to the $1.2288 it hit on Friday, its lowest level since July 2010, while Brent crude oil fell below $97 a barrel to a 16-month low.

Safe haven U.S. and German government bond yields held near Friday's record lows.,

"Investors are just fleeing risk assets," said ATI Asset Management chief investment officer Simon Burge.

The latest sell-off followed disappointing U.S. jobs growth figures on Friday and weak Chinese manufacturing data, which stoked fears that the problems in the euro zone are causing a worldwide slowdown in business activity.

Those fears caused sharp falls across Asian markets on Monday, dragging Tokyo's Topix index <.TOPX> to a 28-year low, and followed a fall of more than 2 percent in U.S. stocks on Friday. The MSCI world equity index <.MIWD00000PUS> was down 0.5 percent at 290.58 points.

UK markets were closed for a holiday on Monday, though the FTSE Eurofirst <.FTEU3> index of top European shares opened down 0.7 percent at 2054.97 points after hitting a six-month low on Friday.

Dell XPS One 27 review roundup an allinone PC worth owning

Let's be honest here: there hasn't been an overly compelling option in the all-in-one PC space in a really, really long time. Not to say there weren't decent options, but that "blow you away" factor has been missing for a good while. No more. Dell's wildly handsome XPS One 27 has hit the ground running, and it's garnering near-universal praise across the web. While it boasts a somewhat steep price point ($1,399 and up), packs a touchpanel option and is landing just months before Windows 8's debut, critics at large seem to have fallen back in love with the AIO form factor thanks to this one machine.

Hot Hardware lauded the Core i7 CPU and NVIDIA Kepler graphics, and they had a tough time controlling their adoration for the Samsung PLS panel that stole the show. PCMag struggled to find cons, noting that the rig managed to put "almost every technology and feature we're looking for in a compact stylish chassis." AnandTech, however, rightfully points out that the lack of a touchpanel is no big deal in the land of Windows 7, but not providing the option for those looking forward to a Metro-fied Windows 8 experience may end up hurting the value proposition in the long run. Hovering over that buy button? Restrain yourself a bit longer while you dive into the source links below.

Wisconsin Team Reveals Way to Treat Drug-resistant Brain Tumor ...

New research from the University of Wisconsin-Madison explains why the incurable brain cancer, glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), is highly resistant to current chemotherapies.

The study, from the brain-tumor research lab of Dr. John Kuo, assistant professor of neurological surgery and human oncology at UW School of Medicine and Public Health, also reports success for a combination therapy that knocks out signaling of multiple members of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) family in brain-cancer cells.

The late U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy died of GBM in 2009. People diagnosed with GBM live on average for only 15 months after diagnosis, even after undergoing aggressive surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Earlier research from Dr. Kuo and other scientists showed that GBM cancer stem cells escape current treatments and proliferate rapidly to cause tumor recurrence.

Several years ago, research suggested that a drug engineered to target EGFR signaling might work against GBM because many brain cancers carried EGFR mutations. Excessive and abnormal EGFR signaling spurs the growth of cancer cells. Although cetuximab, a monoclonal-antibody drug, was successful in clinical trials for patients with lung, colorectal, and head and neck cancers, it failed against GBM.

Research by Dr. Paul Clark, a scientist in Kuo's lab and the study's lead author, shows why. When cetuximab treatment switches off EGFR activity and should inhibit cancer-cell growth, cancer stem cells compensate by turning on two other EGFR family receptors (ERBB2 and ERBB3) and continue to grow. One of these receptors, ERBB2, is implicated in certain types of chemotherapy-resistant breast cancer. Fortunately, another novel drug already approved by the FDA, lapatinib, inhibits ERBB2 activity and signaling by multiple EGFR members.

This study shows that cancer stem-cell growth was markedly inhibited by lapatinib treatment, which results in combined knockout of multiple EGFR family members.

"This is good news, because these drugs target an important mechanism for the (GBM) cancer cells to grow so quickly and evade current therapies, and these molecularly targeted drugs are also well-tolerated by patients and have minimal side effects," Dr. Clark said.

The paper was published in the most recent issue of Neoplasia, an international journal for oncology research.

Kuo, director of the Comprehensive Brain Tumor Program at UW Health and chair of the Carbone Cancer Center brain tumor group, said that results of several brain cancer clinical trials with these novel drugs and other new strategies are pending or underway.

Mubarak sentence: A game of smoke and mirrors in Egypt?

In a run-down maze of slums with electrical wires and laundry tangled across Cairo's mustard sky, Umm Mohammed, 55, put her hands to her face and fell silently to her knees when she heard the news. An Egyptian court sentenced ex-President Hosni Mubarak to life in prison for his complicity in the killing of about 850 protesters during last year's uprising. Once the equivalent of a modern-day pharaoh, the 84-year-old Mubarak is the first Arab ruler to be brought to court by his own people.

"He's done! He's done!" Her neighbors applauded from a sparsely stocked fruit stand, hunched around a small television set. They watched as a visibly thinner Mubarak, donning sunglasses with his arms crossed defiantly, heard the verdict from a gurney in the defendants cage.

But Umm Mohammed stood still, emotionless. Her son, Mohammed Fareed, 23, was one of many protestors who died from gunshots near Tahrir Square. "I feel like I lost both my son and my country. So Mubarak stays in a nice jail? Now what? My son is dead and the revolution has turned my country into a mess. I just want to move on. God protect us."

And her sobriety spread as the cheers and exaltation in Cairo over the verdict were quickly dampened. Mubarak and his two sons, Gamal and Alaa, who had tears in their eyes, were acquitted on charges of corruption. Mubarak's former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly also received a life sentence for the deaths of demonstrators but the charges against other Interior Ministry officials were dismissed. (The Mubarak sons were not freed: they were kept in custody to face trial on other charges of corruption.) Judge Ahmed Refaat insisted the 10-month trial had been a fair one, and before issuing the verdict, rhapsodized about the brave uprising that ousted Mubarak. He called Mubarak's rule "30 years of intense darkness...the blackness of a chilly winter night."

But critics have argued that the investigation had been flawed and highly politicized. It occurred under the military rule of a council of generals who took power at Mubarak's ouster. What's more, instead of a sweeping examination of the systemic abuses under his rule, the prosecutors rushed the case to trial last April in an apparent attempt to placate street protesters. "The same people who have killed and tortured Egyptians are now free to go back to their jobs," says prominent activist Dalia Ziada, who is incensed over the verdicts and let it be known over Twitter. "They're manipulating us with an illusion that we are winning, but in fact they're undermining all our efforts. Our 18-day revolution has been killed in 15 months."

(PHOTOS: Egypt's Presidential Election)

Michael Hanna, an Egyptian-American analyst at the Century Foundation, says that the trial seemingly throws the Egyptian people a bone with Mubarak's conviction but it really pokes them in the eyes. Mubarak and al-Adly's convictions are based on their failure to stop the killing once it started. That leaves a logical hole in the verdict: was no one is responsible for the ordering of killing? Hanna says the trial symbolized Egypt's faltering army-led transition and was woefully compromised from the start. The verdict is almost certain to be appealed on both sides, he says, and lawyers involved have said that many questionable procedural decisions during the yearlong trial had left ample grounds to continue the legal fight. "No one is being held accountable, and so the Ministry of Interior and the whole security apparatus is left unscathed and can go back to sleep in their same beds every night," Hanna says. "It's business as usual."

Steven Cook, a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, says the trial was just a show -- a function of political pressure from Egyptians who wanted revenge for Hosni Mubarak's crimes. "Justice was never possible under Egypt's present circumstances. Now people need to live with the consequences," he says. "A truth and reconciliation commission would have been a better way to go."

The verdict comes at a crucial time, smack-dab between two rounds of Egypt's first truly contested presidential elections. In the runoff vote for the presidency on June 16-17, Egyptians must choose between two of the most historically powerful and divisive forces in Egyptian society: Ahmed Shafik, the last prime minister under Mubarak, and Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, a group that struggled for decades against a state that unabashedly repressed it.

Mubarak's prot?g? Shafik, who is running on a tough security platform, has found support among many who are distressed by 15 months of a security vacuum and economic turmoil, and are nostalgic for the old order and even the man who led it. If interpreted as a bold sign that justice has been served, the verdict could bolster support for Shafik, an undeniable symbol of the Mubarak era, who proudly lauds the former president as one of his role models. Or it could hurt his credibility, with Mubarak's repressive security apparatus being seen as let off the hook.

Ahmed Riab, a worker at a caf? in an upscale neighborhood in Cairo, says he's refusing "silly calls" by protesters to take to the streets because of the verdict. He's voting for Shafik on the hopes that he can restore order and stability. "It's the end, Mubarak's behind bars, what more do these people want?" he huffs. "Mubarak behind bars is a warning to Shafik that he could be next if he continues the same system."

Shadi Hamid, director of research at the Brookings Doha Center, reasons that, if anything, the verdict hurts Shafik, turning the past into a more salient campaign issue. "In the next two weeks before runoffs, all the Muslim Brotherhood needs to do is simply remind the people that this is a man whose boss and friend was just put behind bars," he says. "It'll now be harder to elect an ally of a man who is now serving a life sentence."

(PHOTOS: Egypt's Revolution Lost)

The Muslim Brotherhood has already called for nationwide protests in response to the verdict, with Yasser Aly, a spokesman for Morsi's campaign, calling the verdict "legally absurd" and calling for a retrial. At the same time, more than 150 trials involving policemen accused of killing protesters during the revolution have reportedly ended mostly in acquittals.

Well-known lawyer and human rights activist Ragia Omran says today is a "devastation for the revolution." She listened to the verdict in her car, en route to what she calls another "judicial disaster" that's even more indicative of an old regime that still presides over a deeply divided country. Renowned Egyptian activist Alaa Abdel-Fattah and his sister Mona Seif have been summoned for interrogation and accused of involvement in an arson attack earlier in the week that damaged presidential candidate Shafik's campaign headquarters.

"It's extremely ironic that Mubarak's cronies and sons get off, yet on the same day, activists who spent time in corrupt military jails are now being interrogated on ridiculous claims," she says. "The regime is relying on the naivet? of the Egyptian public, who they think will be appeased by the figureheads being sentenced. But this was never a revolution against two men. It's against the system."

Hanna says the simultaneous interrogations of activists like Abdel-Fattah is just one more black eye on the perception that Egypt's judicial system is independent and not deeply politicized. "At this point," he says, "this is all turning into an over-the-top caricature that's bordering on parody."

Omran isn't amused as she heads into the prosecutor's office, lending her support to Abdel-Fattah. "My blood is boiling. The same system prevails. It's just one more reminder, like we needed one, that the revolution is not complete." She stays on her cell phone for the rest of the day, fielding calls about the police outside the Mubarak trial harassing and arresting Egyptians furious at the verdicts (fights broke out in and out of court soon after the verdicts were announced). "It just never stops."

After reportedly putting up a fuss, Mubarak was put in a helicopter and flown to Tora Prison to start serving his sentence. There is only resignation back in Umm Mohammed's neighborhood. On the street, she stood feebly, holding a cracked plastic-framed portrait of her deceased son. "I wish these protests never happened. I wish we could go back to the ways things were," she cries. "What good has come of any of this?" She walked back to her one-room flat and put the portrait of her son back on her wall before arranging a sparse lunch of bread and cheese. "It's just another day," she says. "No change. Just another day."

Facebook to let users vote on privacy changes

4 hrs.

Facebook is letting its nearly 1 billion users vote on changes to its privacy policy.

The previously announced changes include new sections explaining how it uses people's information. The updates also reflect recently added features such as a new profile format called Timeline.

The new policy also opens up the possibility for Facebook to start showing people ads on outside websites, targeting the pitches to interests and hobbies that users express on Facebook.

The voting period starts Friday and runs through next week. The company had announced the changes in May, a week before its initial public offering of stock. Facebook's highly anticipated IPO landed with a thud, closing just 23 cents above its $38 offering price on its first trading day. The stock has declined another 26 percent in the two weeks since then.

This is the second time Facebook Inc. is letting users vote on policy changes. The first time was in 2009 when Facebook was a much smaller, privately held company with fewer than 200 million users.

It may be the last time, though.

Thirty percent of Facebook's 900 million users, or 270 million people, have to vote on the changes ? for or against ? to have the process be binding. Otherwise, Facebook considers the vote "advisory."

That will most likely be the case. Facebook's experiment in democracy hasn't panned out as expected. While thousands of people have left comments on Facebook's proposed changes, "our original intent was to get high-quality," and not high-quantity comments, said Erin Egan, Facebook's chief privacy officer of policy.

Facebook said it is still interested in getting user feedback on its policies, but it is reviewing how best to do so.

"While our participatory mechanisms may change, our commitment to greater transparency, accountability and responsiveness will not," Facebook vice president Elliot Schrage wrote in a blog post. "We will explore ways to bring user suggestions and concerns before Facebook's management."

Strength Training for Fitness | Desio Sports Medicine

Friday, June 1st, 2012, 8:27 pm

The world of exercise can essentially be broken down into two categories: cardiovascular exercise and strength training.? And, while the benefits of healthy cardio are well documented, today we?re going to look at the importance of strength training and what it can mean to your overall fitness.

So first, what is strength training?? According to the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), ?Strength training is the use of resistance (free weights, resistance bands or machines) in conjunction with body movements to increase the strength of muscles.?? Simply put, these are exercises that enhance muscle performance and overall physical fitness.

In the end, each athlete will choose a different training regimen.? From an almost endless list of strength training exercises, here are a few of the most popular:

  • Crunches
  • Squats
  • Bench press
  • Rowing machine
  • Bicep curls
  • Leg press
  • Free weights
  • Push-ups

Most importantly, what are the benefits of strength training?? According to the AOSSM, strength training can result in increased flexibility, improved sports performance and may aid in injury prevention.

Preventing ?Overtraining?

There is no secret weapon for preventing a strength training injury.? There are, however, ways to improve your chances.? Of course, your first line of defense is to consult with a Sports Medicine Specialist before beginning any strength training program.

The Mayo Clinic also lists a few ?Do?s and Don?ts of Proper Technique.?? Borrowing from the list, here are a few of their tips, along with our thoughts on the matter:

  • Do ?lift an appropriate amount of weight.? Always train within your means. ?Lifting too much is a surefire way to hurt yourself.
  • Do ?use proper form.? Only perform movements you know you?re doing correctly.? Bad form can inevitably cause injury and work against your progress.
  • Don?t ?skip your warm-up.? Never take warming up lightly.? As the Mayo Clinic explains, ?cold muscles are more prone to injury than are warm muscles.?

iOS 6 rumored to debut Facebook integration

Apple may be setting its status to "in a relationship with" Facebook, if new rumors pan out. Apparently iOS 6 will feature Facebook integration similar to what we've seen with Twitter in iOS 5, like being one of the default Share To options, but there's also the possibility that Facebook account integration could enable even easier single sign-on for multiple apps.
