AUSTIN (KXAN) - After a long slew of 100 degree days this summer, more than a few Austinites were looking longingly towards the near-freezing temperatures of Austin's first cold snap.
Austinites know outdoor activities: stopping at street vendors; listening to live music; and jogging the city's outdoor trails. On Sunday, however, they had to get used to dressing smart and bundling up, too.
"I can't believe I'm wearing gloves," said Elsa Barron. "I thought? we had such a hot spell there. Here I am, wearing gloves, hat, downed vest. It's unbelievable but it's beautiful."
After a long hot summer, this first freeze of winter can even trigger special dreams for some.
"I really hope it snows, so cross your fingers, okay?" said Gerrit Ilai.
Native Texans may need some adjustments, but if you're from the Great North like Mike Beatty, this weather is like being home again.
"I grew up in Canada, so I'm welcoming the cold weather snap," said Beatty. "This is like spring in Canada."
Of course, pets, plants and pipes need protection. At nurseries like The Great Outdoors in South Austin, they got a jump on the freeze to protect the merchandise on the property.
"We started protecting our plants, especially anything remotely tender," said Chris Chirafis. "A lot of things that are tough, evergreens aren't going to need a lot out in the landscape but anything remotely tender we're going to be putting insulated blankets on or pots we'll bring inside to protect from the cold night."
Best to err on the side of caution: Turn up the thermostat and pass the blankets.
